Phone lines are often overwhelmed and can take quite a long time to complete the process. It is advisable for applicants to arrive at the DC agency to go through the security check and get to the processing center.
The documents to be submitted include the completed but not signed passport, US citizenship certificate, identity, copy of the identity document, recent passport photo and fees. The application can be processed during the same day, but you may be asked to return to it within a day or two, depending on the time of departure and the agency's current earnings.
